Instagram was initially launched in 2010 as an iOS-only app for shutterbugs to share snapshots. The site soon expanded to the world of Android users (who now make up about half of the platform) in 2012. In 2016, Instagram made a controversial move to an algorithmic rather than chronological feed. Instagram has always followed a model in which social media postings should be about sharing moments as they happen, not carefully crafting and archiving permanent online personas. Pictures and videos uploaded to the site auto-destruct in 24 hours, creating a transient and easygoing feel in the app; if you post something indiscreet or regrettable, there’s no need to panic, it will be gone tomorrow anyway.

Unfortunately for the purity of this vision of social media, the actual users in the world have a much different idea. By and large, they want to be able to archive important pictures or videos from their own feed, and even from the feeds of other people. After much heel-dragging, Instagram caved to the overwhelming public pressure and started allowing users to save their own snaps and videos. However, they have held firm to a line in the sand about saving content belonging to other people: they don’t and won’t support it. Users can save their videos to their Instagram Stories, but aren’t supposed to meddle with the images of others.
Video Downloader For Instagram And Facebook
Of course, you know what has happened: users want to do it anyway, so they have found ways. There are many different approaches to downloading and saving someone else’s Instagram live video stream. It isn’t our place at TechJunkie to decide whether you should do this or not; that’s between you and the person whose video you want to archive. All we are here to do is to show you the tools you can use, or not use, as you see fit. As you’ll see, there are quite a few of them.
Knowing Your Options
Quick Links
You have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to options for downloading other people’s Instagram videos. If I showed you all the details of all the available tools, this would be a very, very long article. Instead, here’s a crash course in your video saving options, presented in no particular order.
Use Screen Capture Apps
One of the simplest methods of saving a live streaming video is just to capture it as it plays on your device screen. PCs used to not have the video processing bandwidth to be able to do screen captures of their own display in real-time, but that balance has radically shifted in recent years. Even a typical consumer-level PC should be able to screen-capture most any video that it can play.
There are countless screen recording apps, both for desktop and mobile users. In fact, for desktop Macs the new iOS 11 Control Center comes with a built-in recording feature, so you don’t need to install anything extra. iPhone users can get TechSmith Capture for free.
Over on the Android side, one of the most powerful free apps is Screen Recorder, a screen recorder and video editor with a wealth of features. Screen Recorder is ad-supported, so it is completely free, and it doesn’t require root access to work.
Windows users might be best served with Open Broadcast Software, a free open source video recording and editing suite that will capture great screen video easily. It works for Linux and Mac as well, and will run on any Windows version from Windows 7 on. OBS Studio is still actively supported, and the latest version released was 23.2.1 on June 15, 2019.
Use the TechJunkie Instagram Video Downloader
Not only did TechJunkie already create a general article on downloading video from Instagram, we also created a powerful and simple tool to grab any Instagram video, live or not. Just visit our Instagram download tool page, enter the URL of the video you want, hit “Process” and then hit “Save File”. Note that our tool won’t download videos from accounts that are private, only from public accounts.
Use Instagram Apps and Websites
Whenever a major site like Instagram refuses to create functionality that people want, third-party app makers leap into the gap to deliver the goods, and the Instagram embargo on downloading other people’s instant video is no exception. There are a host of Instagram-enabled apps that will grab that video for you. We’ll go over a few of them here.
Video Downloader for Instagram
Video Downloader for Instagram (Android) is simple and direct. You provide it the URL of the video, and with one click you can download or repost the video. The app works on IGTV and Vine as well, and is ad-supported and thus completely free.
PostGraber
PostGraber is a very powerful video downloading website. Unlike other solutions, when a post contains multiple video streams or files, PostGraber grabs all of them. (Most apps just grab the first one.)
Blastup by Gramblast
Blastup by Gramblast is another website where you just provide the URL and the site does the rest. Blastup gives you a free trial that will let you see if you like the service.
IFTTT
Available for iOS or Android, IFTTT (If This Then That) is a powerful scripting solution that can do just about anything. However, what it can do for us here is run a lovely little applet that will automatically download any Instagram video that you like or add to your feed to your Dropbox account, without you lifting a finger. Getting it configured is a little more tricky than just visiting a website, but it isn’t difficult.
Use the Chrome IG Story Extension
Chrome’s handy extension allows you to save live videos right to your desktop. This method for nabbing Instagram live videos has become increasingly popular since it doesn’t require you to download a separate app and makes it possible to view live videos without anyone knowing you did. However, it is slightly more complicated than the other methods. In this article, we break it down for you, including how to install it and what to do with the files you download.
Downloading Chrome IG Stories for Instagram
Needless to say, you’ll need a Chrome browser.
1. Locate Chrome IG Stories for Instagram at the Chrome web extensions store.
2. Click Add to Chrome.
3. Click Add Extension.
Now just give it a moment to install. A pop-up window will alert you when it’s finished. At this point, you should be able to see an icon for the extension in the upper right hand corner of your browser window.
Using Chrome IG Story
It’s time to find a live video to download.
1. Go to Instagram.com and login.
2. Click on the extension icon mentioned above.
You should be able to see a list of Stories on the left-hand side. You can also use the search box on the right to search for an account. When you’ve located the Story you want, it’s time to download.
1. Click the download icon to the right of the chosen Story.
2. The video(s) will pop up on the right and download as a zip folder. You can view the contents on the right.
3. Open the zip folder.
The folder will contain one file for every item in the Story. Double click on a file to view the video or image therein. Note that this only lets you download Stories. If someone hasn’t saved their live video to their Story, then you can’t download it this way.
